Leo Tolstoy is one of the greatest writers of all time
Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, more commonly known in English as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer born into nobility in 1828. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest writers of all time, and his novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina are masterpieces of Realist fiction. Tolstoy was the fourth of five children, and his father was Count Nikolai Ilyich Tolstoy. As a young man, Tolstoy served in Crimea during the War of 1812. This experience would come to influence much of his later work. In addition to War and Peace and Anna Karenina, Tolstoy wrote numerous plays, short stories, and novellas over the course of his career, including The Death of Ivan Ilyich (1886) and Family Happiness (1859). Through his writing, Lev Tolstoy has left a lasting legacy as one of the greatest authors in history.
In 1860-61, Leo Tolstoy visited Europe, where he met Victor Hugo. This meeting had a profound effect on Tolstoy, shaping his political and literary development. In particular, it inspired him to write books that would have a lasting impact on the world. His influence can be seen in many different genres including drama, philosophy, politics and even music - composers such as Tchaikovsky have adapted several stories into operas or ballets like Sleeping Beauty or The Nutcracker Suite respectively.
